33 Things New in Leopard...
You just started with Leopard. You’re going to start with Leopard soon. You’re not sure when you’re going to move to Leopard. But you want to know more about it.
You haven’t been able to escape the hype. Well, maybe hype isn’t fair, since that implies something that’s overdone. (Well, maybe for some details, it is fair!) Still, you’ve heard about Time Machine, and Spaces, and all sorts of things. But when (if) you think about the details... you’re left wondering... How does it work? How will I use it? Will it make much of a difference in my day-to-day Mac work (or play)? Time Machine looks cool when you see it on the Apple website. But how do you set it up, where are the backups stored—and how the heck do you really retrieve the things that you need? (Hey, did anyone tell you that you can use it to retrieve things that you threw away last month, even though you already emptied the Trash a few times since then? Oh, and that you need a separate hard drive to store the backups?) I’ll tell you about that, and more. Spaces... is that really virtual desktops? (No.) Quick Look: You’ve read about it, but, wow!, wait til you read more about it. Stacks in the Dock. A better, faster Spotlight. But those are only the big things. You’ll want to know about the other interface changes: the improvements to Open/Save dialogs and the Print dialog, and new options for Finder windows. And there are nifty new features in system applications like Mail, iCal, Safari, and Preview. This book doesn’t cover everything that’s new in Leopard; it’s a tour of the highlights, some big, some small, and some downright tiny. It’s doesn’t have step-by-step instructions for using each item, but it does go into more detail than most magazine-type articles that list a bunch of new features and leave you wondering... “Yeah, but how will I use this?”
